In a report recently released by United Nations International Labour Organisation (ILO), the global number of unemployed youth aged 15 – 24 rose by nearly 15 percent over the last decade; more than 300 million others, about 25% of the youth population were living below the $2.00 poverty line and at least 400 million new jobs were needed to fill in for the job shortage.
Interestingly, the revelation is made during a time of increased economic growth in countries world wide, but the more reason for anxiety is the fact that the inability and/or unwillingness of economies/politicians to create enough decent and productive jobs is hitting the world’s young people hardest. The report found that in most regions of the world young people are nearly three times more like to be unemployed than adults, with a ratio of 2.8 unemployed youth for every unemployed adult. “Despite increased economic growth, the inability of economies to create enough decent and productive jobs is hitting the world’s young especially hard”, said ILO Director-General Juan Somavia.
This is creating anxiety because we are not only seeing a growing deficit of decent work opportunities and high level of economic uncertainty, but an impending situation which threatens to damage the future economic prospects of one of the world’s greatest assets, young men and women. “It is an undeniable tenet – and now one that is recognized within the UN as well as other international organizations and governments – that only through decent employment opportunities can young people get the chance to work themselves out of poverty,”
