- 1999 – Tennis: Serena Williams, 2 weeks short of her 18th birthday, won her first Grand Slam tournament when she became US Open champion, becoming the first African American woman to win a Grand Slam tournament since Althea Gibson in 1958
- 2000 – Activists protest against the World Economic Forum meeting in Melbourne, Australia
- 2001 – The September 11 attacks destroy the World Trade Center in New York City, part of The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and crash a passenger airliner in Pennsylvania. In total almost 3,000 are killed
