- 1785-Seth Thomas pioneer in mass production of clocks was born.
- 1812 – War of 1812: The American frigate USS Constitution defeats the British frigate HMS Guerrière off the coast of Nova Scotia.
- 1848 – California Gold Rush: The New York Herald breaks the news to the East Coast of the United States of the gold rush in California (although the rush started in January).
- 1906 – Philo T. Farnsworth, American inventor and television pioneer was born.
- 1919 – Afghanistan gains independence from the United Kingdom.
- 1934-Germans voted to make Adolf Hitler Fuhrer.
1946 – Bill Clinton, 42nd President of the United States was born.
- 1991 – Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev was overthrown by a coup. This led to the fall of the Soviet Union.
- 2003-U.N. special representative Sergio Vieira de Mello was one of 22 killed when a suicide car bomb struck the UN’s Baghdad headquarters.
