THE remains of Anthony Olufunso Williams will be laid to rest today in Lagos. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and an aspirant to the governorship of Lagos State in the elections scheduled for next year, Williams was murdered in cold blood in the morning of Thursday, July 27, 2006, at his Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos home.
Hopefully, the Police would conclude investigations into his murder and unmask the assassins . An expeditious investigation is important but it should be thorough and conclusive. It would be tragic indeed if the murderers of Williams escape undetected, as had happened in several previous high-profile murders, including that of Chief Bola Ige (SAN). At the time of his killing in December 2001, Ige was the serving Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
With a deep sense of loss and stunning shock, but with total submission to the will of the Almighty God, UNILAGfaces commensurate with the family of the late Funsho Williams.
Thursday July 27, 2006 ushered in one of the worst nightmares in the anal of Nigerian history, when Captain, a man that belonged to that class of people who are described as gentle in manners, but formidable in action was hacked to death by wretchedly wicked hearted persons. But we take solace in the words of Dr. Samuel Johnson that “it matters not how a manner dies but how he lives” Anthony Olufunsho Williams lived an exemplary life. He brought the highest virtue to public life and lived the message of The Gregorian song.
“There is a grand old team to play for… we don’t care whether win or draw; or worry how we fare, for we fare, for we only know there is going to be a match and St. Gregory’s College must be there.”
We are grieved when a man of real talent dies who still had so much more to give humanity. Captain, you will be solely missed by many as you are laid to rest today. We pray that the good Lord will give the family you left behind (your sweet mother, your lovely wife and your brilliant children) the courage to pick up the pieces and carry on, goodbye! Captain and may your great soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
Adieu Articulate Akokite!
