Cultism and examination malpractice are two monsters bedevilling the university system in Nigeria and the Delta State University (DELSU) is no exception. However, the story is changing in that University Chancellor, Prof. John Enaowho, a scholar of international repute, who was also Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University, before his current assignment, says adequate measures have been taken to stem this ugly trend in the University. Enaowho also spoke on the challenges posed by Private Universities and the need for Government to protect the public ones.
Looking at the present environment that surrounds our universities, you will discover we are still growing as a third generation university in the sense that we need physical infrastructure, in terms of laboratories, lecture halls, staff offices, because these four areas are actually interrelated and providing conducive environment for these four forces to operate positively is an Herculean task. So considering the academic challenge as the most critical situation, that is the way one could judge the essence of the university. Is it excellent in terms of academic provision? Once the answer is positive, then you know that the university is on the right track.
