The non-competitive rating of many graduates of Nigerian Universities has been attributed to inadequate funding of the nation’s universities. Chicago based Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) researcher, Dr Vincent Idemyor stated this recently in an interview with the Voice of America (VOA) English service monitored in Port Harcourt. He revealed that though the funding situation in Nigerian universities has recorded some improvement since the inception of the present democratic government, several areas still needed serious attention”.
The university don, was of the view that unless the government pays serious attention to several areas of the university system, Nigerian University graduates cannot compete favourably with their counterparts from other developing and developed nations. He identified some of the areas needing attention to include, the technical area, the science and medical sciences. “Why must Nigerians leave Nigeria and go to Liverpool to study tropical medicine.” It should not be so. It should be the reverse”, he insisted. Idemyor advised governments in Nigeria to rise to the occasion and ensure that the universities are adequately equipped to produce graduates that are internationally competitive.
