President Olusegun Obasanjo at the State House, Abuja, launched the Computers for All Nigerians Initiative (CANI). The initiative is aimed at making desktops and personal computers available and affordable to many more Nigerians at cheaper rates. It is commencing immediately with 500, 000 computers. The CANI project is the president’s initiative but is being implemented through a public-private partnership sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, in collaboration with Microsoft and Intel. Obasanjo described the scheme as “a social programme designed to assist individual employees in public and private sectors to purchase personal computers and laptops at discounted prices under affordable and convenient repayment plan for use in their homes and offices.” He said the scheme was another milestone in his administration’s efforts to democratise access to information communication technology which has become the major driver of global socio-economic and political activities.” Media Consultant to the project, Lere Ojedokun, explained that the computers are made with Intel processors and are assembled locally by HP, IBM, Omatek, Zinox, Brian and Beta Computers, and payments can be made over two years at less that N5000 per month. Obasanjo pointed out that his administration appreciated the demands and competitive nature of contemporary global divisions of power, hence his belief that the CANI “would stimulate a vibrant local industry in hardware and software, employment generation, poverty alleviation, wealth creation as well as capacity and competency building for the country’s workforce.”
