Incredible but true, the other day we spent four hours on a journey that should have taken just an hour. Ask me what the cause of that long delay was; I couldn’t place a finger on a thing.
Okay let’s get down to the story. My friends and I had left school at about 7:20pm on that fateful day and we, or our Driver, chose to take us home via Ikorodu road in the heart of Lagos mainland. Personally, I was looking forward to the sumptuous meal that I knew awaited me with an imagined “welcome salutation” once I got home. So with that beautiful thought I drifted off to sleep, but I was soon jolted back to consciousness by some noises from outside the vehicle. “What happened ? I asked, as if I was talking to anybody in particular. I then discovered that our car had stopped.
“Oh my God”! I moaned, “why did this have to happen today of all days, after all I had looked forward to?” I was bitter because my high expectations would be delayed, bitter that I wouldn’t be getting home as soon as I expected to.To further accentuate the problem the day wasn’t so young anymore, so getting help for a broken down vehicle, was going to be quite an ordeal. “Where were we to start from?”, “and who was going to come to our rescue at that time of the night?”, I sat there wondering, with all sorts of thoughts running through my mind, ranging from the reasonable to the ridiculous. “Is this place safe, I hope we will not be attacked by these Robbers that attack broken down vehicles, Hey, how about the dinner, will there be electricity power supply at home to enable me to warm the food that would have gotten cold by now, or would I have to eat a cold dinner ???. So many questions.
However, thankfully, help came through my father’s Car Mechanic who lived around the area where our bus broke down. Alas, my joy was shortlived, after checking what the problem was, the Mechanic declared that the axle of our vehicle actually developed a fault that was affecting the gear system.
Boy, did I complain! My stomach too joined me in this cry for help. I later realized however, that complaining wasn’t going to do us any good and the least I could do was to pray. You wouldn’t believe that, shortly after the prayer, help came almost immediately from an unexpected quarter and we were able to get home not too long after that. That truly was an eventful day.
