There are operational problems in the management of Nigerian University Teaching Hospitals. This view was expressed by Prof Akin Agboola in February 2006 in the journal, ‘Practicing Doctors’. Prof Akin Agboola asked: Why is it so expensive for a poor man to receive required treatment from such an institution, which is a referred center and the last hope for many? Why are there incessant industrial actions by different cadres of medical health personnel, which in turn jeopardize the provision of medical care for those who seek their patronage? Are there alternatives and better ways of achieving the best results from these respected institutions? Will the National Health Insurance Scheme improve on what’s on the ground? Should a change of management structure be embarked upon? It is hoped that the present upgrading of various teaching hospitals in Nigeria by the federal government would not only solve these problems, but would also afford every man a free and affordable access to medical care.
