In a recent interview with the Dean of student Affairs, Professor H O D Longe. It was sad to learn that majority of the UNILAG students are ignorant of the duties and office of the DSA. The office of the DSA is the window of this institution for all students. It is the centre of gravity for the school and the first point of call for students to get information about the school. The DSA sees to the counseling of students’ social life, academic works and their general welfare. Student’s welfare include social contacts and interactions, participation of students in events of Associations, provision of comfortable hostel facilities, efficient transportation system, conducive lecture environment etc.
On hostel facilities, the DSA was of the opinion that the hostels were handed over to facility managers for effective and efficient management, thereby eliminating the bureaucracy and non quick responsiveness of the school authority to situations, which cause a hitch between students and the school authorities.
On intra campus transportation, the DSA said that the school authority had put in place some measures to help convey students at affordable rates within the school premises, since most of the students do not have their own cars. Though this measure is not sufficiently enough, the University will work to improve the situation.
On student – lecturer relationship, students complaints about unhealthy practices of lecturers, such as; lecture boycott and sales of handouts, the office of the DSA investigates such matters. Also in cases where Course Advisers fall short of their duties, seminars are organized to let them understand the psychology of dealing with students.
