John Maxwell was born in central Ohio, in the United States five and a half decades ago. Known as the nation’s foremost expert on leadership, he credits his excellent leadership instincts and his early leadership training to his father, Melvin Maxwell, whom he followed into the ministry. For over twenty-five years, John has led churches in Indiana, Ohio, and California. In 1985, he founded The INJOY Group, a collection of three distinct companies that employ 200 people and provide resources and services that help people reach their personal and leadership potential. In addition to building a successful organization, John has authored more than thirty books, including the New York Times best sellers, ‘The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership’ and ‘Failing Forward’. In 1995, John began dedicating himself full-time to writing, speaking, and consulting. Each year, he speaks live to more than 350,000 people. Known as a dynamic communicator, he is in high demand on the topic of leadership, and he speaks to many American corporations and entrepreneurial organizations. He’s also a popular speaker in churches, non-profit organizations, sports organizations, and television programs. In addition, he dedicates time each year to teaching leadership skills internationally.
John Maxwell’s years in local church ministry allowed him many occasions to visit missionaries and national Christian leaders around the world. He would return from those overseas trips, grateful to God for those leaders and their passion for the gospel; but also frustrated, because he saw that so many of them had never had the opportunity, while in ministry service, to develop their leadership skills. It was during a missions-related trip in the mid 1990′s that he was encouraged by an international Christian leader to take the best of his leadership materials that he’d been teaching for years in North America and format it to fit a global audience. From that challenge and the affirmation of others, John, in 1996, launched EQUIP as a non-profit global mission ministry. It is John Maxwell’s conviction that if the Church ever hopes to impact the next generation and generations to come for Jesus Christ, there must be a return to the strategy that Jesus used - that is, develop leaders. Christ’s public ministry lasted only three and a half years, and what He did with the greatest amount of His time was to train twelve leaders to impact the world over the next generation.
John’s vision for EQUIP is that it be continually committed to developing leaders whose potentials are great but who, hitherto, had limited opportunities for learning leadership principles. He is absolutely convinced that if Christian leaders around the world are trained, resourced, and encouraged, there is no limit to what can be accomplished in fulfilling the Great Commission.
