
Chevron Nigeria and the Environmental System Research Institute (ESRI) (a US-based institute) has facilitated the donation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) software to the Environmental Infornmation Management System (EIMS) Centre located in the University of Lagos. Based in the Unilag Consult building, the centre is a hub for the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME) project. Chevron and ESRI also helped to provide training for both EIMS staff and affiliates on the use of the ESRI’s suite of software. A statement from Chevron in Lagos said that the company provided logistics for the training while ESRI donated the GIS software. According to Chevron’s general manager for government and public affairs, Mr. Femi Odumabo, the donation was in line with the company’s interest in building the centre’s capacity to enable decision-making in support of GCLME project objectives. He noted that the donation was consistent with the company’s principle of partnering with reputable organisations around the world for sustainable development and building capacity, particularly in the area of education. Mr. Alabo George, ESRI representative in Nigeria, said that his company was happy to witness the successful execution of the GCLME project using ESRI’s GIS technology as the information engine to drive the regional vision. The vice chancellor of Unilag, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe, expressed his appreciation to Chevron and ESRI for the installation of the GIS software which he described as a large support for human capacity development and knowledge. He gave an asssurance that Unilag has put in place efficient infrastruture to support the facility.
