Today is a day I would remember for years to come. We had been informed in Medilag that the students undertaking their psychiatric postings would be visiting Modupe Cole’s school for the mentally challenged. I was anxious to get there early that I left my stethoscope in my room. When I arrived there, the various mental problems my eyes beheld were too much for my mind. I saw heads thrice mine, some as small as my fist and others with appendages in abnormal positions. We got to another part of the school where I saw a boy locked in a cage. This aroused my curiosity so I asked why. I found out this boy in a cage was a cannibal. He derived joy in eating human flesh and drinking the blood.
I found out that a lot of these diseases could have been avoided if the mothers of these children had undergone proper anti-natal care. I made up my mind after this experience that I would educate the public as often as possible of the advantages of ante-natal care.
