Nowadays, things like low self esteem have become quite common place in our society especially when describing the upcoming generation.” He has low self esteem” is used to describe young people who don’t feel good about themselves and show this by bending to the whims of peer pressure , retreating completely from society or becoming entangled in its caprices. Self esteem has a lot to do with the mind especially our view about ourselves; when we talk about our self esteem, we are in one word qualifying, how we think, what we feel and our beliefs about ourselves. The patterns of self esteem start very early in life, for example when toddlers accomplish the feat of learning to walk. One can see the obvious satisfaction and confidence it gives them. They no longer want to be held, they want to walk and run around on their own. Our perceptions about ourselves greatly influence every facet of our lives, our motives, attitudes, behaviour and our emotional adjustment. It could also affect our health and like Braden said “positive self esteem is the immune system of the spirit helping an individual face life problems and bounce back from adversity”. No wonder we have misfits in society. To build one’s self esteem might look difficult but it is really easy. Simply regard yourself the same way you regard whoever you respect. Too many of us amplify our weaknesses, as well as exaggerate others strong points. Let’s start seeing ourselves for the numerous gifts that lie within us and start appreciating our several talents, but don’t stop there. Look for areas where those talents can be put into use. I think the major reason most of us fall into the class of individuals with a low sense of worth is because we fail to look at the bright side of ourselves, but only look at the bright side(or I wont say bright) or the most obvious side of the “happening babes” on campus or the inner caucus in class. But have you ever stopped to think that ,every thing that topnotch guy or girl has you also have, first and foremost, a brain. With that you know you can go anywhere. So let’s look inward, rediscover who we really are(positively), acknowledge it. You may ask, “ how do I acknowledge my special gift?” Simply look for where it’s needed, (now I know that’s not easy but effort pays off in the long run) and don’t company with individuals who put that gift down. Always say nice things about yourself. Feel good about yourself, and develop yourself by upgrading yourself riqourously. That way you are bringing value to the market place and thereby increasing your self worth.Tags: Self esteem, self worth
