Wonders, they say, shall never end. Imagine what I saw on the internet the other day. An Indian woman, Bimbala Das, who fell in love with a cobra has, since Wednesday May 31st, married the snake. The ceremony was held at Atala village near the Orissa state capital Bhubaneswar in India. The bride’s mother, Dyuti Bhoi, told a local TV channel that her daughter had been ill until she started offering milk to the snake after which she was cured. This, she said, is why her daughter fell in love with the reptile. “Love is blind”, they say, but I dare say it is deaf, dumb and all together handicapped. On the day of the wedding ‘the groom’ must have been shy as it refused to come out of the anthill where it lives. In its place, a brass replica snake stood in for the hesistant groom as priests chanted mantras to seal the union. The bride, 30 year-old Das, said that “Though the snake cannot speak nor understand, we communicate in a peculiar way”. The other day a tribal girl was married off to a dog. How will they communicate? How will they live together? I’m sure if you ask them, you will get the same answer: “We communicate in a peculiar way”.
