Flowers have played a major role in the existence of man. As a result of how they have been engraved in the lives of men, they have accrued loads of superstitions. These superstitious beliefs vary according to type of flower, the right time and place to give the flower, the growing or finding of the flower, and fortune-telling with flowers. Most superstitions on flowers can mostly be traced to the myths surrounding them. Also, superstitions could be related to the medical roles these flowers played. The origins of flowers are quite doubtful because they go way back into the realm of folk ways. One of such superstitions is the belief that it’s bad luck to give an even number of flowers to someone because that’s reserved for the dead. Also, it’s wrong to take flowers off a grave, or you might soon find yourself in one. If you pick a dandelion that has seeds and blow at it, the number of seeds still on the stem will be the number of children you’ll have. If a girl picks a daisy and counts out the petals as you remove them with “he loves me”, “he loves me not”, you’ll find out how the boy you fancy really feels. If a girl picks a bunch of flowers (especially daisies) with her eyes closed, the number of flowers indicate how many years until her marriage. Some flowers, such as anemones, are used as charms to ward off disease or ill-fortune. Day lilies are believed to alleviate sorrow by causing the wearer to forget all about her troubles. Poppies have a similar effect.
