
Eating is a necessity for growth and development. But what we eat affects our health either positively or negatively. Here are a few healthy eating tips:
•Ensure that you take breakfast because your cognitive functioning needs a lot of energy. People who do not eat breakfast tend to work less efficiently. Whole meal bread, whole meal cereals are a very good start for the day.
•Reduce the overall amount of fat eaten, particularly those derived from animals.
•Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Try to consume at least five (5) different portions of fruits and vegetables everyday. Fruit juices are also very good.
•Increase your amount of complex carbohydrates such as pasta (e.g. spaghetti), sweet potatoes, yams, etc, for maximum energy.
•Rely more on white meat (poultry and fish) due to their low fat content. For instance, an increase in the amount of oily fish that you eat will help your heart even more as the oil contained in fish such as mackerel, herring, salmon, reduces heart diseases.
•Limit the amount of dairy products, particularly eggs and cheese, because they are high in cholesterol. Drink more of skimmed milk or semi-skimmed milk. Skimmed milk has a high percentage of calcium which helps to maintain strong bones and healthy teeth.
•Take plenty of water instead of relying heavily on soft drinks and other artificial drinks.
