The much awaited WAUG-Tennis, Athletics, Table-Tennis Championship WAUG-TATT tagged UNILAG 2006 was declared open on Saturday 25th February, 2006 by the ECOWAS Executive Secretary, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas. The opening ceremony of the WAUG-TATT championship which commenced at about 5:00 pm Nigerian time at the Sports Complex University of Lagos, witnessed the arrival of dignitaries who had come from far and near to grace the occassion. In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibidapo Obe, welcomed the personalities present at the ceremony, advising all participating athletes against the attitude of winning at all cost. Over 65 universities across the West African coast participated in the UNILAG 2006 games. The University of Lagos of won their 1st West African University Games – Tennis, Athletics and Table Tennis (WAUG-TATT) Championships at its ultra-modern sports complex leaving others miles behind and with envy, capping the night with a superlative closing ceremony. The University of Lagos which boast of some second string national athletes in its fold, won the final overall medals table with a total of 30 medals made up of 14 Gold, 8 Silver and 8 Bronze. Unilag was outstanding in all three sports – Tennis, Athletics and Table Tennis (TATT). They led in medal tables in all the sports. There were some surprise entries into the final medals table, including Benson Idahosa University which finished 16th with 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Nasarawa State University also made its impact felt by placing 5th with 4 gold medals. Talking about surprises, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) surprised even themselves with a paltry 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. They shared the 22nd position with the University of Ado-Ekiti and were only ahead of Ambomey Calave of Benin Republic. Following on the heels of their success on the tracks and indoor games, the University of Lagos displayed what could pass for an international standard closing ceremony, with the Centre of Creative Arts entertaining the full house with a variety of Nigerian cultural dances. The school rounded off the night with a superlative display of fireworks, reminiscent of the Abuja 2003 8th All Africa Games closing events.
